Why Do We Do a Double Refinement in Colour Correction?

When it comes to colour correction, one thing we always remind our guests at Arena is this: we can’t always predict exactly how the hair will respond. That’s why we take every step with care — starting with a strand test and a detailed consultation.

Why a Strand Test Matters

A strand test allows us to see how your hair lifts and how it reacts to colour. Every head of hair is unique, so this is a vital step before making any big changes. Alongside this, we carry out an in-depth colour consultation and skin tone analysis.

By identifying whether you have a warm or cool skin tone, we can make sure the new colour will truly suit you. After all, when you’re investing time and money into a transformation, you want to feel confident that the end result is right for you.

Why Colour Corrections Take Time

Even with years of expertise and professional products, colour corrections don’t always go exactly to plan. Hair can only take so much in one sitting, and sometimes the desired result simply won’t be achieved in one visit.

I’ve been there myself — I once pushed my own hair to its limits, and it ended up so damaged that I had to cut it into a pixie crop. Even with professional aftercare, it took time to get my hair healthy again. This is why at Arena, we handle colour corrections one step at a time, always putting the health of your hair first.

What Is Double Refinement?

Once hair has been pre-lightened, it usually leaves a very raw, bleached colour. To balance this, we apply a toner. Toner works to neutralise unwanted tones, but because the hair is in such a raw state, that toner has to work extremely hard. On its own, it’s often not enough to give you the polished, long-lasting finish you’re looking for.

That’s where double refinement comes in. After toning, we apply a gloss colour to refine the result. This:

  • Delivers your desired colour finish

  • Adds incredible shine

  • Makes hair feel thicker and healthier for up to 16 washes

  • Helps your colour last longer

While it is an added cost on top of your service, it’s something we recommend in almost every correction. And if we don’t feel your hair needs it, we’ll always be honest with you.

The Importance of Aftercare

All colours fade — even permanent ones. That’s why professional aftercare is so important to protect your investment and keep your colour looking its best between appointments.

What to Expect from a Big Correction at Arena

Large colour corrections can take 6–12 hours. It’s a long day for both you and your stylist, so we always encourage you to make yourself comfortable. Feel free to bring food — we have a fridge available for storage — or even arrange a delivery (as long as it’s not too smelly!). We’ll also offer you refreshments regularly, but you’re welcome to ask any time.

And if you’d prefer to spread the cost, we also offer Klarna to make things a little easier.

At Arena, every colour correction is carefully planned, with input from different team members to make sure we achieve the very best possible result for you. Double refinement is just one of the tools we use to get you there — because your hair deserves nothing less.
